Academy: Young keeper joins Cats

Sunderland AFC can confirm the arrival of goalkeeper Oliver Pain on a one-year deal.

The 18-year-old, who was formerly at Crystal Palace, will join up with the club’s academy as an under-19.

Speaking about the completion of his move to Wearside, the Australian born player said: “It is an honour to sign for a club like Sunderland. The facilities and the academy is just incredible and I’m really enjoying my time here.

“All the staff are great and they are mentoring me in the sense that I’m becoming a man as well as a goalkeeper, hopefully they can take me to the next step now.”

While at the club Pain will work alongside goalkeeping coach Mark Prudhoe, who has revealed he has been impressed by what he has seen in training.

“Oliver came to us and did a week’s training and to be fair to him we have been really pleased with him so far.

“He has got a lot of work to do but his working week is quite good because he trains with the first-team, under-23s and the youth team so his development is across the board.

“He has a great stature about him for a goalkeeper so hopefully we can continue to build him up and see how far we can push him.”
