Reaction: Dickman encouraged by display

While Sunderland under-18s’ wait for their first Premier League victory continues, Elliott Dickman was encouraged by his side’s latest showing at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The young Black Cats produced a fine display but were made to rue a host of missed opportunities as two second-half goals saw the Baggies earn all three points.

Speaking to safc.com Dickman shared his frustrations but admitted he was pleased with his side’s performance.

“It was disappointing to lose but I was really pleased with our efforts in the first-half especially because I couldn’t have asked for anymore from the players,” he said.

“Adam Bale missed a penalty and that was a real chance to put us in control in the first half but even after that we looked good and continued to create chances.”

He continued: “It has been a tough start to the season but we need to continue to play our football, stick to our principles and the lads will develop.

“Development is key at this stage and that’s what we are focused on. Hopefully the players will learn from this and be more ruthless in their next game.”
