Connelly: Striker on return to action

Lee Connelly has revealed he is delighted to be back in the thick of the action.

The young Scotsman returned from injury on Saturday, however was unable to prevent Sunderland under-18s suffering a narrow defeat against Newcastle United.

Connelly moved from Scottish club Queen’s Park in July and enjoyed a bright pre-season which saw him score 10 times in five friendlies.

Injury meant the striker missed the start of the season but speaking to safc.com he admitted while he was pleased to make his U18 Premier League bow, his focus is soley on helping the youth team turn their fortunes around after a challenging start.

“It was great to be back and get on the pitch but the result is the main thing and that was disappointing,” he said.

“It’s finally good to make my U18 Premier League debut, we did well in the first half and worked hard but our second-half performance let us down.

“We are all disappointed because we thought we worked hard but hopefully we can turn things around and I can start to find some form in front of goal.

“Hopefully I can help the team get a few points on the board because I feel in good shape and pretty sharp as well.”
