Asoro: Swede focused on goals

Joel Asoro is savouring every moment in red and white, admitting hard work and determination is key to succeeding.

The 17-year-old thought his header on 76 minutes had won the game for Sunderland under-23s at Cardiff City on Friday, only for a last-gasp equaliser to see the lads squander two points in their opening Premier League Cup match.

While the result leaves Andy Welsh’s side without a win in three games, Asoro, who has featured three times for the first-team so far this season, told safc.com he believes focus and commitment is vital to turning the development team’s fortunes around.

“It feels very good to get on the score sheet but we just need to keep going and focusing on the next challenge now,” he said.

“I had a few chances, I created some space but next time I should’ve looked around me, talked to my team-mates and maybe looked to have put them through.

“But I’m pleased that I got a goal, I just need to keep going and run more because when I did that I created more space and more chances.”

He continued: “As a team we have got to listen to the coaches and learn from the mistakes and go again in our next game because that’s what’s important for us.”
