U23s preview: Welsh on United encounter

Andy Welsh has urged his players against complacency ahead of their trip to Manchester United on Monday evening.

Sunderland under-23s produced a ruthless display on Friday as they opened their Premier League International Cup campaign with a victory over Benfica.

While Heriberto Tavares cancelled out Joel Asoro’s opener, second-half substitute Luke Molyneux came to the fore late on as he confidently knocked home the winning goal.

That stretched the young Black Cats’ unbeaten run to three games following victories over Blackburn Rovers and League Two side Notts County in the Checkatrade Trophy.

However, Welsh has refused to get ahead of himself and warned his players against complacency as they take on United.

“We are looking forward to it but we have got to rest and recuperate ahead of our trip down there because we know it's not going to be easy,” he said.

“It was a tough night and a hard night on Friday but the Lads did well, they came through that and now we turn our attentions to our match against United.

“Luke has been pushing and pushing to play, he is a young lad and he has helped create competition for places at the front of the team.

“We have plenty of options with Asoro, Josh Maja and Rees Greenwood. There are four or five there so Luke has had to bide his time,” he continued.

“He has been patient but he is pushing every day in training. He is a powerful strong runner and we are looking to give him more game time as the season move on.”
