Academy: Wright excited to step up

Dan Wright has spoken out about his excitement for the upcoming season, being quick to pay homage to those that coach him.

The midfielder completed his scholarship at the end of last season and is now preparing for life in the development squad.

Having been at the club since he was eight, Wright has risen through the club’s academy ranks and along the way has picked up international recognition with England.

After being given a taste of under-21s football last term, Wright showed his class as he notched a goal in a 3-1 win at Chelsea which will undoubtedly give him confidence ahead of making the transition on a permanent basis.

Speaking to safc.com Wright paid tribute to all the coaches along the way that have helped him throughout his time at Sunderland.

“The coaches have always been confident in me and helped me out if I don’t understand the game,” he said.

“They have been excellent throughout my time at the club, helped me with my weaknesses and encouraged me to do what I am good at.

“Hopefully I can do the best I can next season work hard in pre-season and prove what I can do and that I deserve to be there. It has been a good experience and I’m glad to have had the chance to step up.

“I feel as though I have taken it quite well and that’s given me a few more chances for next season.”
