Surf's up: From Cali to Wearside

From Phil and Gary Neville to Ralf and Michael Schumacher, add Lynden Gooch and his brother Darshan to that list of brothers who are both professional sportsman.

While Lynden looks to forge a successful football career in England after enjoying a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers last term, the USA under-23 international has revealed something rather interesting about his home life in California.

With Baseball, Basketball and American Football dominating a large part of the spotlight across the pond, hidden further down the sporting spectrum is surfing.

Lynden’s brother, Darshan, is a professional surfer and has appeared in a host of films as well as competing in numerous competitions in Santa Cruz.

Speaking to safc.com about his surfing sibling, Lynden revealed he has learned a lot about surfing from his brother and takes a lot of his mental drive into his own career in the UK.

“It’s a lot different but obviously growing up in California it’s a big shift from reality,” he said. “Seeing what he does and how much he puts in to that makes me realise just what it takes.

“He taught me how to surf; he used to take me out on the waves and he taught me what I know and I still do a bit of surfing now.”

He continued: “My training is more about aerobic training such as running, and a lot of his is a lot more upper body as he uses his arms a lot so it’s a bit different.

That said, I enjoy it and it’s a good test for myself.

“He normally wakes up quite early normally before the sun comes up and checks the surfing conditions to see if it’s good enough to go out, and he surfs twice a day and is always busy in front of cameras and stunt scenes.”
