U23s: Storey relishing training camp

Alex Storey is revelling in the challenges that lie ahead in Sunderland under-23s’ Spanish training camp.

The development team jetted off to warmer climes on Friday morning as they continue their preparations for the start of the 2016-17 Premier League 2 season.

Having been back in training now for three weeks, Andy Welsh’s young guns have already been put through their paces at the Academy of Light with an intense fitness-fuelled approach.

With three games also under their belts, against Seaham Red Star, Hearts and Darlington, the under-23s are now embarking on a four-day training camp in order to fine tune preparations ahead of their final pre-seasons fixtures.

“We’re all looking forward to the trip because it’s an opportunity to get some more fitness under our belts in a different environment,” Storey said. “With a number of the older lads in and around the first-team it’s offered some of the youth team players the chance to step up and challenge ourselves in the under-23s squad.

“It’s a great opportunity because it gives us a chance to see what life’s like around the development team so that we can continue to work hard to get there in the future.”

He continued: “Pre-season has been good so far, I’m trying to adjust to the different style of football because it’s a lot more physical, quicker and technically better.”
