Nelson: Forward raring to go

Andrew Nelson is relishing the start of the Premier League 2 campaign following the conclusion of Sunderland under-23s’ pre-season training camp in Spain.

Having endured a gruelling four-day camp in the intense Marbella heat, the young Black Cats have said adios to Spain as they return home to Wearside.

However, with no time to rest pending their arrival back in the north east, the development team are faced with a trip to Leeds United at the weekend where they will have their first chance to apply what they have learnt while in sunnier climes.

Speaking to safc.com Nelson revealed he is feeling fresh and sharp and now can’t wait for the season to get underway.

“It has been a great trip and one that I think has really helped the lads,” he said. “The conditions are tough, it’s really hot out there but we know it’s an important part of pre-season to get done.

“I feel a lot better for it and I feel in good shape so hopefully I can continue to work hard with the team and we can have a good season.”

He continued: “The lads had a great year last season so expectations are obviously going to be high.

“It will be tough because this is a younger group but we have got some good players and now we’re all ready for the season to get underway.”
