Pre-season: Maja looks to reap the rewards

Josh Maja has revealed he is feeling in good shape ahead of Sunderland under-23s’ 2016-17 Premier League 2 campaign.

The second-year scholar has enjoyed a strong start to pre-season as he was welcomed away to the first teams 10-day training camp in Austria before being named among the substitutes in the club’s 3-0 victory over Hartlepool United last week.

Since then, Maja has travelled to Spain with the under-23s as preparations for the new season intensify.

Speaking to safc.com the forward has lavished praise on the regimented training routine set out by the club's coaches, admitting that has helped him get into good shape so that he can try and build on his fine efforts last term.

“Pre-season has been good so far,” he boomed.

“It has been tough but I feel as though I’m coping with the training and the heat well, hopefully now I can use this to help me continue to do well throughout the season.

“The heat makes it very, very hard because you find it hard to breath. Thankfully the coaches have been excellent throughout the trips and designed some very good sessions for us."

He continued: “It’s a really important year for myself because I need to take the opportunities like I did last season and hopefully if I can do that then I can build on what I achieved last year and push on with the under-23s.”
