Lawson: Forward credits U23s' backroom staff

Carl Lawson has lavished praise on Sunderland under-23s’ backroom staff for their expert efforts in Spain.

Currently undertaking a gruelling four-day training camp in Marbella, the development team have been tested to their limits with intense sessions ensuring peak fitness is achieved ahead of the opening day of the season.

But with the Lads' return to Wearside now on the horizon, Lawson has hailed the packed schedule produced by Andy Welsh and his backroom team as invaluable preparation for the season ahead.

“There have been a lot of new players come into the under-23s team this year so it’s always nice to get used to the lads you are going to be playing with this year,” he said.

“It has allowed us to get to know how they like to play and especially the hot weather training has been good for the lungs.

“It has been good and I think everyone has got a lot sharper here so credit to the staff for putting this camp in place for us.”

He continued: “The hotel and the facilities for training have been very good. The coaches have put on a good few sessions for us and I think everyone is feeling the benefits.”
