Stopper: Talbot praises desire and commitment

James Talbot paid tribute to Sunderland under-23s’ desire and commitment following their hard fought point against Burnley on Sunday.

The Black Cats welcomed the Clarets in a rich vein of form but found themselves up against it when George Brady was dismissed with just 19 minutes gone.

While Sunderland continued to dictate the flow of the game, Jimmy Dunn netted against the run of play as Burnley went into the midway interval with their noses in front.

Frustration mounted as the Black Cats fired blanks in front of goal, but with time all but up George Honeyman spun inside the box and rifled home to earn Andy Welsh’s side a share of the spoils.

“The lads dug deep and showed great character to get back into the game,” he said.

“We had 10 men for a long time and it was always going to be difficult but we dominated the game and in the end probably could’ve won it.

“We have been on a good run and it has been great to get some minutes under my belt. Most importantly though we got back into the game against Burnley.”

He continued: “We played well but Burnley defended brilliantly and made it hard for our lads. Eventually our pressure paid off and it’s good to keep this run going.”
