Bittersweet: Robson hails cup experience after defeat

Josh Robson has admitted there is no crueller way to go out of a cup competition than on penalties.

Sunderland endured penalty heartache last night at Molineux as Wolverhampton Wanderers booked their place in the next knockout round.

With the scores locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, it was hold your nerve time as both sides lined up on the halfway line.

Vito Mannone saved well from Sylvain Deslandes to hand the Black Cats a slender advantage but misses from Luke Molyneux and George Honeyman saw Wolves advance.

Speaking to safc.com, the full-back shared his disappointment at their cup exit but admitted the competitive nature of the Checkatrade Trophy has proven an invaluable experience.

“It’s probably the worst way you can go out of a cup competition,” he said.

“In the first-half we did really well, Tom Beadling scored a great goal and we created a lot of chances.

“After the break though we were under a lot of pressure but we did well to make it hard for them and then it came down to penalties.

“Penalties are all about luck and in the end we just didn’t have that on our side and we went out.”

He continued: “It has been great to play in this competition because it’s something we’ve never had before.

“We’ve never had the chance to play in competitive matches against league sides and top quality players so from that point of view we can take something away from it.”
