Striking issue: Nelson on competition for places

Andrew Nelson is relishing the hot competition in Sunderland under-23s’ squad.

The 18-year-old scored a brace in a behind closed door friendly against Hartlepool United last week as he continues his road to recovery from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nelson was then rewarded with a starting berth in Sunday’s Premier League Cup match against Burnley on Sunday, which saw him assist George Honeyman’s leveller.

However with 17-year-olds Joel Asoro and Josh Maja also vying to catch Andy Welsh’s eye, Nelson has told safc.com that he is savouring every second of challenging himself against the two starlets.

“I’m really enjoying the challenge because Joel and Josh are both fantastic players,” he said.

“They are so talented and that’s highlighted by the fact they’ve had a chance to showcase themselves in the first team.

“It’s a great test to push myself against them but I know my game is completely different to theirs.”

He continued: “I offer something completely different to them so if Andy Welsh wants to select someone who is going to run and run then I’m the person.

“If he wants to choose someone who is going to hold the ball up and run in behind then maybe Joel or Josh are better placed because they are fantastic at that.

“It’s a great challenge and I’m savouring every second of it.”
