Embleton: Youngster keen to continue form

Elliot Embleton is refusing to get carried away after appearing in his first matchday squad in Sunderland’s Premier League victory over Watford.

Just 17, the midfielder has enjoyed a fabulous season so far having played most of his minutes for Sunderland under-23s.

Still only a second-year scholar, Embleton got his inaugural taste of first-team action when the Black Cats took on German giants Borussia Dortmund in their final pre-season match in August.

Since then though, Embleton has flourished in Welsh’s development squad and was rewarded with a place in the matchday squad in the Black Cats’ 1-0 win over the Hornets last Saturday.

Speaking to safc.com, the youngster shared his pride but refused to get caught up in moment as he prepares to take to the Stadium of Light pitch in Friday’s Premier League International Cup match against PSV Eindhoven.

“It was an incredibly proud moment for myself and my family,” he said.

“It’s where I have always wanted to be because at the end of the day it’s what I have worked for since a very young age.

“I’m really happy to have had a chance but I know it is just the start and nothing has been achieved yet.

“I want to experience it more often but I know that will all come with hard work and if I continue to do what I am doing,” he continued.

“I’m looking forward to the game against PSV and hopefully I can continue to show what I can do.”
