Academy: Connelly pleased by FA Youth Cup turnaround

Lee Connelly was pleased to be among the goals in Sunderland under-18s' FA Youth Cup win over Burton Albion last week.

While the Brewers got off to a flying start at Eppleton Colliery Welfare, courtesy of Charlie Dowd’s third minute goal, the youth team struck back with vengeance.

Josh Maja levelled from close range before Luke Tandy netted a spectacular own goal as he went to cut out Joel Asoro’s through ball.

Connelly gave the Black Cats a two-goal cushion in the second period when his turn of pace saw him breeze into the box, Maja then made sure of the Lads’ route into the fourth round as he bagged his second.

Speaking to safc.com, young Scottish striker Connelly paid homage to his team-mates and spoke of his delight to get his name on the score-sheet.

“It’s always nice to get a goal and help the team to win,” he said.

“It’s a new competition for me and my first taste of it – I’m delighted with the win and I thought we did well to come from behind and get the win.

“We didn’t start very well but we got back into it and there were some very good performance out there.

“I’m delighted to get another goal, I had a few chances and managed to make one count. Hopefully now I can get some more goals for the team in the New Year.”
