Preview: Welsh calls for clinical edge

Andy Welsh has set his sights on a more ruthless display from Sunderland under-23s on Monday night.

The development team head to the home of the Premier League champions to face Steve Beaglehole’s young Leicester City side with both teams gunning for their first win in the Premier League 2.

Following a strong opening weekend of football last Sunday, Welsh was left disappointed at full-time against Chelsea as his young guns failed to convert one of their many clear sights of goal.

While the game finished in a draw, the under-23s coach has revealed he has been working on the training ground over the last week to ensure the Lads return from the King Power Stadium with three points.

“We played really well at times especially in the first half and we created some really good opportunities,” he said.

“We didn’t take our chances but performance wise I was happy because in the second half I thought we defended very, very well.”

He continued: “It was a good performance to start the season with and especially as it was against a top team, but it’s important we continue that against Leicester.

“It will be a different team to the one we took to the King Power last year and won 6-1 but hopefully we can get a positive result from the trip if we fine tune our play in the final third.”
