Beekeeper: Forward hails U23s spirit

Two-goal hero George Honeyman has lavished praise on Sunderland under-23s following a last-gasp victory at Leicester City in the Premier League 2 on Monday night.

Andy Welsh’s side fell behind inside 18 minutes when Bartosz Kapustka poked home from close range before Honeyman converted a penalty three minutes later.

The Beekeeper then added his second following a free-flowing counter-attack as Sunderland drew level for the second time on the hour mark after Admiral Muskwe had headed past Max Stryjek.

But the young Black Cats stole the show late on as Ethan Robson dispatched an exquisite free-kick over the head of Daniel Iversen and into the top corner to ensure the three points returned to Wearside with Sunderland.

Speaking to safc.com Honeyman admitted the lads' team spirit came to the floor as they claimed their first three points of the season.

“It’s really satisfying to get the win because it makes it all the better,” he boomed.

“When you look at how we have done under the circumstances with a pretty young team against an experienced opposition it’s fantastic.”

“We aren’t the biggest team so we had got to use our body well and compete for everything, we did that and it showed in the end.”

He continued: “All I can do is try my best and with two goals against Leicester hopefully my name has been highlighted.”
