Reaction: Dickman's delight

Elliott Dickman lavished praise on Sunderland under-18s after they brushed aside Doncaster Rovers at the Academy of Light on Saturday.

While the young guns were held at the break, a ruthless second-half display saw the Lads run out convincing 4-0 winners.

Lee Connelly grabbed the bulk of the goals as he netted his second hat-trick in three games while Jack Diamond expertly chipped Rovers’ keeper to also get on the scoresheet.

Speaking to safc.com Dickman hailed his new-look under-18s team and reserved a special mention for Connelly’s goalscoring prowess.

“The lads played really well and it was great to see that we didn’t underestimate Doncaster,” he said.

“Their mind-set was good and it prepared them for a tough game so that was pleasing to see.

“We have got to be better prepared for every game and take every individual match on its merit but the lads showed they learned from their performance last week against Oldham Athletic.”

He continued: “Lee scored three goals again and that’s unbelievable. It just shows he has got a knack for putting the ball into the net but Jack scored as well and that’s important for the rest of the team.”
