Academy: Dickman takes the positives

Elliott Dickman believes there were a host of positives to take from Sunderland under-18s’ defeat against Arsenal on Saturday.

The young Black Cats were spirited throughout but were gunned down by a ruthless Arsenal display which saw them concede four goals.

However, despite seeing their early lead overturned, Dickman has taken a lot of heart from the Lads’ display at the Academy of Light.

“We played really well and I don’t think the scoreline gives a true reflection of the game,” he said.

“We were 1-0 up and in control of the game and then they scored with their first shot on goal so it was level at half-time.

“We gave four goals away and didn’t defend as well as we should’ve done because our performance warranted a lot more than what we got. We created enough chances and did enough to get more out of the game, but they took their chances and we didn’t.”

Joel Asoro marked his first start since December with a goal as Sunderland under-18s raced into an early lead.

The Gunners struck back just before half-time and that swung the pendulum in the visitors favour as they went on to secure a 4-1 victory.

“I’m delighted for him because it has been a slow process getting Joel back into the side following his injury.

“It’s great that he scored because he gives us something different, and he could’ve had a lot more as the chances were there, but I’m delighted he is back.”
