Keeper coach eyes charity challenge

Sunderland's goalkeeping coach, Nigel Spink, is taking on the Three Peaks Challenge for charity this weekend.

Goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink is gunning for a different kind of hat-trick this weekend.

Spink, 53, is one of the 'Crackpot Climbers', a ten-strong group attempting the Three Peaks Challenge for the Breast Cancer Campaign charity.

Alongside wife Lesley, the former Aston Villa goalkeeper will attempt to scale the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales - Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon - in 24 hours, including travel time.

To complete the challenge, the group must complete a total ascent of over 11,000 feet, as well as descending and racing between the three climb sites.

Spink and his party will head to Scotland later this week before the challenge kicks off at 4am on Saturday morning at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.

Scafell Pike will then follow, with Snowdon providing the last obstacle to be completed - hopefully before the 4am deadline on Sunday.

Despite the tough task ahead of him, Spink is looking forward to getting the challenge underway and raising valuable cash for charity in the process.

"The idea came about during a social gathering back home in the Midlands and grew from there," he said.

"We've been doing some training and are all really looking forward to this weekend.

"The girl who has organised it has a connection with someone who has breast cancer, which is a disease which has also affected the lives of a couple of other people in the party."

He continued: "We've done Scafell Pike and Snowdon quite a few times so we have an idea of what's coming - but what we don't know is how it's going to feel to do all three!

"The preparations have gone quite well. The fitness staff at the club have been a help and we've taken all the advice which has been given.

"We're just looking forward to getting going."

Spink and the Crackpot Climbers have a £7,000 charity target, and any donations can be made online quickly and easily by clicking here.
