Jordan Henderson says Sunderland can't afford to be caught living in the past when they face Wigan tomorrow.
The youngster has urged his team-mates to forget about the win over Manchester City and focus all their efforts on picking up a first away win of the season.
Manager Steve Bruce has identified improving on last season's tally of two away wins as his top priority, something Henderson wholeheartedly agrees with.
"We can't sit back on the Manchester City game," he said. "We can take the positives from that, but it's gone now and we can't live in the past.
"The focus has to be on the Wigan game. We were disappointing there last year. The away form hasn't been the best but hopefully that will change on Saturday."
Wigan beat Tottenham 1-0 in North London before the international break and have since added Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley to the squad.
Henderson and Cleverley were team-mates for England's under-21 side earlier in the week but could line up against each other at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
"I know Tom has just signed there and I had a bit of banter with him on international duty," Henderson added.
"I am looking forward to facing him if we are both selected.
"Wigan are a good team - you have to be to beat Spurs 1-0 at their own ground.
"They have some good players and have brought some new faces in, but there is enough quality in our team to go there and get a result."
