Mensah: 'I am ready'

Exclusive: John Mensah is ready to return for Sunderland.

Sunderland defender John Mensah says he is ready to return to the side if selected this weekend.

The 'Rock of Gibraltar' has missed more than two weeks of action after picking up a hamstring problem against Birmingham but made a successful return to training today.

"I am feeling good and I am ready to play against Wigan," said Mensah, who captained Ghana in the World Cup in South Africa in the summer.

Speaking to safc.com, manager Steve Bruce confirmed Mensah had returned to training at the Academy of Light this morning.

But he also added a note of caution, saying: "I will see how he trains this week."

Mensah, who re-joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Lyon in the summer, made 18 appearances for the Black Cats last season.

He has missed three games - versus West Brom, Colchester and Manchester City - so far during the current campaign.

Should the veteran defender return, he will compete with Titus Bramble, Anton Ferdinand and Paulo Da Silva for a centre-back berth with Michael Turner likely to miss out.
