Black Cats legends set for finals

Sunderland will take part in this weekend's Masters Cup finals , when they take on Manchester City in the knock-out competition.

Black Cats legend Michael Gray skippered Sunderland's Masters side to victory during the regional heats of the tournament back in July and now the veterans will pull on the red and white shirt again as they compete in this weekend's finals.

The Lads will be joined by former Aston Villa, Barnsley, QPR, Birmingham, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Tranmere players in the knock-out competition.

The eight teams won their regional heats with the grand final being held at Birmingham's LG Arena on Sunday.

Sunderland have been pitted against Manchester City in the quarter-finals and the players will be hoping for the same result that the Black Cats had against the Blues in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light last Sunday, when a last-minute penalty gave Sunderland the all-important win.

Former Sunderland winger Nicky Summerbee is lining up for the opposition on this occasion, he told BBC Sport: "I am still as competitive as ever and am looking forward to putting on the famous Manchester City shirt once again.

"I am playing against a lot of my good mates in the Sunderland team in the quarter-finals so definitely don't want to lose that one."

In the other quarter finals Aston Villa will take on Tranmere, Barnsley play QPR, while Midlands rivals Birmingham and Nottingham Forest go head-to-head.

The winners will go through to the semi-finals, and then the grand final later in the evening.

Tranmere Rovers won last year's tournament after beating Bolton Wanderers 4-3 in the final.

Sunderland: Sean Musgrave, Chris Makin, Martin Gray, Brian Atkinson, Lee Howey, Martin Scott, Michael Gray (c), Martin Smith.
