Steve Bruce was left cursing Sunderland's injury luck after Fraizer Campbell was ruled out for sixth months.
In-form Campbell was stretchered off during the 1-0 win over Manchester City and scans later revealed damage to the former Manchester United man's cruciate knee ligaments.
The injury is similar to the one sustained by David Meyler late last season.
"We've had two cruciate knee ligament injuries in five Premier League games with Meyler getting injured at the back end of the season," Bruce said.
"We could certainly do with a bit more luck in that department. We're devastated for Fraizer and hopefully he can make a speedy recovery. Everybody at the club wishes him well.
"He's had a wonderful start to the season and that's what usually happens. Meyler had had a wonderful start too. That's football, but it's deeply frustrating."
