Jordan Henderson has surprised manager Steve Bruce with the pace of his comeback from injury as the midfielder returned to training with Sunderland's first team today.
The 19-year-old midfielder damaged his ankle against Wigan last month but has responded well to treatment to push his way back into the senior squad ahead of Sunday's game against Manchester City.
But the product of the Academy system remains a doubt for the game, with Kieran Richardson facing a late check ahead of the game.
Lee Cattermole was also out on the training pitch today after he was substituted during the 4-0 win over Bolton and Bruce will leave it as late as possible before naming his side.
"We'll assess things tomorrow," Bruce said. "Jordan's made a fantastic recovery and he trained today, but it might be a bit too soon for him.
"Lee and Kieran also trained, but we will have to wait and see on them. Cattermole looked alright and John Mensah should be okay as well."
The Sunderland supremo also confirmed Andy Reid remains out of contention with a hamstring problem.
"We're still light in midfield but we'll have to deal with it, it's as simple as that," he added.
Sunderland will also be without Lorik Cana (suspended), while on-loan striker Benjani is ineligible against his parent club.
