The victory ended the Black Cats 14 game win-less run and saw Darren Bent fire Sunderland's first top-flight hat-trick in almost a decade - the previous being Kevin Phillips at Valley Parade back in December 2000.
The national press are also suggesting that Bent's treble should have caught the attention of England boss Fabio Capello.
The Sunderland marksman's tally is up to 19 for the season, with only Manchest United's Wayne Rooney bettering it.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce told the media in his post-match press conference: "All I can say is he must be in his thoughts, he has to be because of his goalscoring exploits.
"He is a natural goalscorer, so he still must be in with a shout because you have got [Wayne] Rooney and you have got [Jermain] Defoe. Those two come to mind, and there are not too many after that, natural goalscorers.
"He has got to be knocking on the door, has to be."
The crucial win over Bolton has not stopped the football rumour mill as this morning's Mirror is reporting that Sunderland could be tempted to lure Wolves striker Kevin Doyle to Wearside should the Midlands outfit be relegated at the end of the season.
The Mirror suggested that Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy has conceded that Wolves have little chance of keeping £6.5m striker if they go down, with Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton set to battle it out for the Irishman's signature.
This morning's Journal are reporting that Steve Bruce is already preparing a list of targets for next season.
The article suggests that the SoL chief is hoping to reinforce his squad with up to six new players this summer, as he is apparently prepared to listen to offers for first-teamers like Kenwyne Jones and Steed Malbranque if they can bring in reinforcements.
