Steve Bruce is likely to be without Fraizer Campbell for tomorrow's big game at Portsmouth.
Campbell, 22, damaged a hamstring in training yesterday and is currently receiving intensive treatment of the injury.
Bruce is likely to name new signing Benjani as backup to regular strike partners Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones, who have scored 21 goals between them this season.
The 31-year-old Benjani made his debut off the bench against Wigan on Saturday in the final minutes of the game.
Meanwhile Bruce will also likely be without Anton Ferdinand (ankle), Kieran Richardson (calf) and John Mensah (hamstring).
But one or more could be in with a chance of joining the squad. "We'll see how those three are," Bruce added.
Jordan Henderson awaits a scan on an ankle problem.
