Hall of Fame spot for Ball

Youth team coach Kevin Ball was presented with a special award prior to Tuesday's game against Aston Villa at the SoL.

Former Sunderland captain and current assistant academy manager Kevin Ball has been inducted into Show Racism the Red Card's Hall of Fame, recognising his contribution to the campaign for more than a decade.

Kevin follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Ryan Giggs, John Barnes and Thierry Henry, as well as Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn and former captain Gary Bennett.

Kevin met Show Racism the Red Card's community education manager, Craig Bankhead, pitchside before last night's fixture with Aston Villa, receiving his award for his work as both a player and coach at the Club's Academy of Light.

Receiving his award, Kevin said: "I'm very honoured to have been inducted into Show Racism the Red Card's Hall of Fame. The work the organisation does in raising awareness of racism in society and enhancing social inclusion is fantastic."

Craig added: "Kevin has done a lot to promote the campaign and has attended lots of events over the years. Inducting him into our Hall of Fame is the least we could do. He is a great role model for young people."

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism charity which was set up in the North East almost 14 years ago. The campaign uses the profile of current and ex-professional football players to educate young people against racism in society.
