Jeffries signs up for Niall's Mile

Olympic boxer Tony Jeffries has put his name forward to join SAFC Foundation's latest fundraising initiative.

The football club's official charity, SAFC Foundation, are holding a city-wide event this October and hope to get as many people joining in Niall's Mile.

The latest entrant is none other than Sunderland's olympic bronze medalist - boxer Tony Jeffries!

The fundraising event, named after the Foundation's trustee and SAFC chairman Niall Quinn aims to get Sunderland active as everyone across the city is invited to take part in a series of walks that are planned around Sunderland - whilst raising money for a good cause in the process.

Each day next week (Monday 12 - Sunday 18 October) an organised walk will take place at venues across the city, members of the public can join one of those or better still, organise your own walk at a venue suitable for you- a workplace, school, park, gym, wherever you choose.

And anyone who signs up will receive great benefits including a badge, an invitation to a free family fun day at the Stadium of Light and a chance to win prizes such as SAFC match tickets, signed SAFC items or a personal visit by SAFC mascots Samson and Delilah or even Niall himself.

Jeffries said: "I'm happy to lend my support to the Niall's Mile event. Sunderland is my home and it's always great to see the people of Sunderland coming together to get behind a worthwhile cause like SAFC Foundation.

"I've been in hard training recently for my fight on the 16th October, so hopefully I'll be able to complete the mile without too much trouble. I'm looking forward to getting out and about and meeting the other Niall's Mile walkers and giving them some encouragement!"

The organised walks will take place as follows:
• Monday 12 October Mowbray Park meeting point Bandstand
• Tuesday 13 October Seaburn meeting point Outside Leisure Centre
• Wednesday 14 October Herrington Country park meeting point Car Park
• Thursday 15 October Mowbray Park meeting point Bandstand
• Friday 16 October Seaburn meeting point Outside Leisure Centre
• Saturday 17 October Stadium of Light meeting point is Bob Stokoe Statue
• Sunday 18 October Stadium of Light meeting point is Bob Stokoe Statue

12.15pm for a 12.30pm start

Companies, schools and groups are being encouraged to organise their own walk and more equals more - the more people that sign up to walk Niall's Mile, the more chances they'll have to get more great benefits.

Participants are also encouraged to get sponsorship for their walk, all funds raised will go to SAFC Foundation, who work with 30,000 young people and families every year to raise aspirations.

To register, participants should email niallsmile@safc.com with contact details or telephone 0191 551 5191 and a full Niall's Mile pack will be sent out.
