Ten top pop acts light up the home of Sunderland AFC.

Thousands of concert-goers flocked to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light yesterday, for the region’s biggest-ever pop extravaganza, blinkbox North East Live.

Ten top pop acts took to the Wearside stage in front of an audience of almost 35,000 music fans. The show kicked off with up-and-coming US teen sensation Austin Mahone, who was followed onto the stage by rising stars Rixton and Neon Jungle. Next up were Union J, performing at the show for a second consecutive year, followed by Katy B and The Vamps – who also returned to Sunderland after featuring in last year’s North East Live.

Top UK girlband The Saturday’s wowed the crowd with a host of their biggest hits, whilst Rizzle Kicks and Jason Derulo kept the party atmosphere going, before the event culminated in the headline act, the sensational Jessie J, who showcased some of her best known songs, Domino, Who You Are and Price tag.

After the show, Sunderland AFC’s commercial director Gary Hutchinson, said: “The event was a fantastic way to end our summer concert season. We have seen almost 90,000 music fans come through the doors at the Stadium of Light in just three weeks and I would like to thank everyone who has played their part in making the shows happen. There is a huge amount of planning and preparation that goes into delivering successful concerts, both for club staff, who have worked tirelessly in recent weeks and our external partners and agencies, such as Sunderland City Council, without whom we could not stage the shows.

“We are delighted at the success of the shows and the positive economic impact they have had on the region.”

Sam Bush, from concert promoter AEG said: “We are delighted that blinkbox North East Live has been such a fantastic success. We have had hugely positive feedback from everyone, especially the artists, who have really enjoyed playing in front of the lively North East crowd. We did a great event here last year and it was fantastic to have an even bigger show this year.”

The show brought to a close the Stadium of Light’s summer concert schedule for 2014. Music fans are advised to listen out for future announcements regarding 2015.
