Red card not overturned.
Stephane Sessegnon will serve a three-match ban after an appeal against his red card was rejected.
Sessegnon was sent off for a challenge on Aston Villa’s Yacouba Sylla during Sunderland’s 6-1 defeat on Monday evening.
Head coach Paolo Di Canio confirmed the club’s intention to launch an appeal, but this has been rejected by the Independent Regulatory Commission.
The suspension means the Beninese forward will miss the rest of the season with games against Stoke, Southampton and Tottenham to come.
