Head coach hails new signing’s arrival.
Sunderland chief Paolo Di Canio took time out from a rather hectic pre-season schedule in Hong Kong to heap praise on new signing Emanuele Giaccherini.
The midfielder made the switch to Sunderland last week and no time has been wasted to ensure the Italian international is up to speed with his team mates after joining them at their training camp in Italy and in Hong Kong for the Barclays Asia Tournament.
Sunderland boss Di Canio said: “In my opinion he’s one of the best players in Europe to suit my system.
“There are not many wingers with his intelligence or ability to interpret the role.
“The way he moves around the pitch and the space he creates for his team mates and his overall ability to read games – he’s one of the top players.”
Last month Giaccherini was on duty for Italy in the FIFA 2013 Confederations Cup. The winger was instrumental throughout the tournament, which saw his country reach the semi-finals.
Reflecting on Giaccherini’s performance in the competition, Di Canio added: “He was one of the best players in the Confederations Cup and he’s a regular in the national team.
“We know the Italian team is one of the best in the world – they’re in the top five!
“He’s a very good player; he’s further behind his team mates in terms of fitness because he finished late at the Confederations Cup.
“I’m sure the fans are going to enjoy what they see from him because he is a good player.”
