‘We wanted to win’ – Mannone.
Goalkeeper Vito Mannone cut a frustrated figure after Sunderland slipped to defeat in the Barclays Asia Trophy Final against Manchester City.
A first half wonder-strike from Edin Dzeko was the difference maker in the clash as Mannone was well-beaten by the Bosnian’s powerful shot.
“Everyone is disappointed, we came here wanting to win the tournament ,” the Italian told safc.com after the game.
“We really took it seriously and we wanted to win.”
Paolo Di Canio’s side went close to equalising with Adam Johnson, Wes Brown and Emanuele Giaccherini firing wide in the first half.
Sebastian Larsson almost forced penalties with a forceful free kick that was well saved by Costel Pantilimon late in the game.
“We did a good job and I don’t think we let ourselves down,” Mannone continued. “The pitch didn’t help us, it made it difficult for both teams but we did the best we could.
“We’ll go home with much more fitness as it was a tough test tonight, and on Wednesday.
“We’ve played two of the top teams in the Barclays Premier League and by the time the season starts we will be much fitter and be on top of our game.”
