Flashback: Cup clash with Trotters

by Kate Smith

We look back on last cup meeting v Bolton.

Sunderland last met Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup (now sponsored by Budweiser) almost four years ago to the day.

The teams clashed at the Stadium of Light with a place in the fourth round at stake – and it was Sunderland who came out on top.

Kenwyne Jones opened the scoring in the 57th minute, heading home Kieran Richardson's cross having twice previously been denied by goal-line clearances.

Carlos Edwards hit the crossbar and then supplied the centre from which Djibril Cisse made it 2-0.

Ebi Smolarek's deflected effort reduced the arrears late on, but Sunderland held out to progress to the next round, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers after a replay.
