Ladies progress in cup

Cardiff's resistance broken as ladies march on.

Sunderland’s ladies progressed to the semi-finals of the Women’s League Cup with a hard-fought victory over Cardiff City at Eppleton CW.

Goals from Beth Mead and Sophie Williams secured the victory as the Lady Black Cats look to retain the trophy they won last season.

The hosts took the lead on the half-hour mark when Williams’ cross was helped on by Natalie Gutteridge before Mead hit a low drive into the far corner leaving Rhian Nokes with no chance.

Progress was secured ten minutes from time when Mead intercepted a short goal-kick and rounded Nokes before setting up Williams to tap home.

Ladies manager Mick Mulhern was delighted with his side’s victory and he praised his side’s resilience as they won their fourth consecutive game.

He said: “It was a tough game against a well organised side.

“Obviously after a few weekends without a competitive game we were a bit rusty but I’m pleased with my players and it’s a sign of a good team who can dig in and win ugly.”

Sunderland: Laws, Christon, Bannon, Salicki, Greenwell, Ramshaw, McDougall (McFadden), Furness, Williams (Atkinson), Gutteridge (Sutcliffe), Mead.
