Loan debut for Pickford

Keeper starts Burton spell with draw at Whaddon Road.

The new Football League season kicked off over the weekend – with loanee Jordan Pickford in action for new club Burton Albion.

The England U19 international joined the Brewers late last week and was handed an immediate debut against Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road on Saturday.

Both sides finished in the League Two play-offs last season, each losing in the semi-finals.

It was another debutant – Cheltenham’s Jamie Cureton – who fired the hosts into the lead after 18 minutes before Byron Harrison blasted home a second goal just after the half-hour.

But Burton hit back as Billy Kee scored from the penalty spot before former Sunderland man Rory Delap netted an equaliser four minutes short of the hour mark.

“I'm relieved that we managed to come back from 2-0 down which is no mean feat at a place like Cheltenham in the first game of the season,” Burton manager Gary Rowett told the BBC.

“But I'm also a bit disappointed that we didn't win the game.”

Pickford’s stay at the Pirelli Stadium is the third loan move of his career following successful spells with Darlington and Alfreton.
