Diakite pleases Di Canio

Head coach happy with defender’s progress.

Summer signing Modibo Diakite made his Sunderland debut in the draw at Southampton.

The defender made the move to Wearside in July and missed out on pre-season due to injury, however, the 26 year-old returned to action this past weekend.

Following his 90 minute run-out, head coach Paolo Di Canio was impressed with what he saw.

“Diakite did very well against a very tough side,” Di Canio told safc.com.

“It was a very good performance from him as he’s not had as many games as some of the players; he did not travel to Hong Kong or Denmark.

The head coach continued: “He had a lot to deal with in Rickie Lambert, then you’ve got Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez, they are all difficult players to come up against.

”He is a top competitor.”
