Following the home win over Everton, the winger told safc.com that head coach Paolo Di Canio has given the team a timely boost at a vital stage in the season.

McClean said: “The dressing room is in good spirits and rightly so.

“It was a battle today; we put in a great performance and got another three points on the board, which is huge for us.

“There’s no doubt about it, there’s a new found confidence in the team – the manager’s instilled that into the players.

“He’s come in and given everybody a lift and given us the confidence that we were lacking as a team.”

The Irishman revealed that Di Canio’s ‘’never say die’ attitude has rubbed off on the players and attributes that approach to Sunderland’s improved style of play.

“We just keep going and going until the end and he drills that into you before the game,” McClean added.

“He actually tells us we need to go out there and play for 95 minutes and not to stop - it’s beginning to pay off because we’ve taken six points from the last two games.

“We can enjoy the result now, but after the weekend it’s back out on the training pitch and we’ll all be fully focussed on Aston Villa.

“It’s another massive game for us, but today was a big step forward for the team and club.”
