Boss pays tribute to travelling support.
Paolo Di Canio was at pains to pass on his thanks to the travelling fans following the defeat at Chelsea.
Sunderland’s new head coach was welcomed into the dugout by hundreds of supporters who had made the long journey to Stamford Bridge.
The Black Cats suffered a 2-1 defeat after taking the lead, but Di Canio felt his side’s efforts were appreciated.
“I want to thank the fans,” he told SAFC TV. “They made me feel very emotional, not because they sang my name, but because of their support.
“They understood straight away how much work we have put in this week and they came in their numbers to support their team.
“We lost the game, but they still clapped their hands because they saw the lads fight for the cause with pride and honour.”
