Winger reflects on derby day goal.

Adam Johnson admits he could not have picked a better moment to score his fifth goal of the season as Sunderland romped to a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park.

It’s great to score at St James’ Park and I think that one really killed them off.

Stephane Sessegnon had given Paolo Di Canio’s side the edge in the opening period, before the winger doubled the Black Cats’ lead on the 74th minute with a delightful solo goal.

Johnson’s left-footed effort curled past substitute goalkeeper Rob Elliot with 15 minutes left on the clock.

“At 1-0 you can never sit back,” Johnson told safc.com. “I picked the ball up and I saw a gap so I just kept going and the rest is history.

“It’s great to score at St James’ Park and I think that one really killed them off.

“There’s no better feeling than scoring a goal, but to score in the derby, it’s a tremendous feeling. I’m delighted not just for me but for the team too.

“Then Vaughany popped up with that unbelievable strike and the whole stadium went flat – all you could hear was the Sunderland fans.”

The 25 year-old was also buoyed by the team’s overall performance and believes Newcastle struggled to cope with them.

“I thought the team were excellent. We showed desire and I think we wanted it more. Our commitment was first class.

“They just couldn’t deal with us on the counter attack.

“We knew in the second half we had to come out and give more of the same, Newcastle may have had the edge early on but we knew if we could see the first 10 minutes out we could go on and win it – and we did!”
