Defender relishing City trip.
John O’Shea says the trip to Manchester City provides an opportunity for Sunderland to build on last week’s win over Wigan.
Sunderland notched their first league victory of the campaign at the Stadium of Light last time out and, like City, are still unbeaten in the Barclays Premier League this season.
And O’Shea says the Wigan win is a timely confidence boost amidst what he says has been an encouraging start to the campaign given the circumstances.
“We had some difficult games away from home and obviously some of the lads were adjusting fitness-wise,” he explained.
“All those factors would have added up but we’ve got quality in the squad and confidence from getting that first win under our belts.
“I think Saturday’s is a game we can look forward to. Last season we caused them lots of problems and hopefully we can do the same again.”
The game will see Adam Johnson return to his former club less than two months after making the move to the north east.
Meanwhile, O’Shea missed the 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium last term through injury as Sunderland became the only team to get anything at City in the league all season.
But he says things have moved on since then ahead on the clash with the champions.
“It’s a totally different situation now,” the defender added. “Both teams have added to the squad and made some changes – hopefully Johnno will be able to give us some inside info.
“We’re under no illusions – we will have to play well.
“But we can go into the game with confidence having got that win against Wigan and with our good performances away from home.”
