MON hoping McFadden rises to challenge.
Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill has laid down the gauntlet to new signing James McFadden.
The manager has told the front man, who penned a short term deal with the club last week, that his time on Wearside can be whatever he chooses to make of it.
The former Everton and Birmingham man was a free agent after leaving Goodison Park last season and has been training with Sunderland for over a month.
“James has been training with us for just over six weeks.” O’Neill said.
“The few reserve games that he’s had should stand him in good stead.
“It’s entirely up to James what happens from now.” O’Neill added.
“He’s the type of guy that if he breaks into the side come the end of January, to see it as an opportunity, and I hope he grasps it.”
