Defender recalls first derby experience.
Carlos Cuellar admits he still gets goosebumps thinking about his first UK derby.
The Spanish defender’s first taste of rivalry was as a Rangers player against Celtic after he moved to Ibrox from Osasuna.
Coming in from abroad I didn’t realise how big the derbies are
- Carlos Cuellar
Cuellar featured in the Glasgow derby for the first time in October 2007 as the blue half of the city celebrated a 3-0 win.
He was taken aback by the intensity and is set for another derby first this weekend as he gets set for a first taste of the Wear-Tyne clash.
“It was amazing – my first feeling of a derby game,” he said.
“That was one of the best games I ever played, with the atmosphere and the feeling you get.
“Coming in from abroad I didn’t realise how big the derbies are, but everyone was telling me about it weeks beforehand on the streets.
“One minute before the game we came out onto the pitch and the noise from the crowd was unbelievable.
“I feel emotional even remembering it now.”
