Coach looks ahead to U18s' weekend action.

Sunderland’s under-18 side travel to Southampton on Saturday in the Barclays U18 Premier League and the young Black Cats will be hoping to build on their draws with Arsenal and Fulham as they take on the Saints.

A difficult run of fixtures has seen the youngsters yet to pick up a win in the early stages of the campaign but coach Carlton Fairweather is hopeful the trip to Hampshire could prove fruitful for the under-18’s.

“Southampton are a well-run academy and they’ll be a good side - they always are - but we feel if we play well that we’ll get a result,” Fairweather said.

“The lads have trained well this week and they seem really up for it; they’ll need to be.

“Obviously we’re looking to build on our last two performances [against Fulham and Arsenal] because we created chances and scored goals in those games.

“What’s essential is that we look for that clean sheet now and hopefully the results will follow.”

A full match report from the game at Staplewood Training Ground will be available on safc.com on Saturday evening.

Kick-off is at 12 noon.
