Young defender reacts following win over Liverpool.

U18 defender Tom Beadling could not hide his elation as the young Black Cats secured their passage into the play-off stage of the Barclays U18 Premier League.

Beadling, who only returned the fold early in 2013 after a serious back injury, starred as goals from George Honeyman and James Stinson sent Sunderland on their way to a 2-0 victory over Liverpool.

And Beadling told safc.com that the players are delighted to have confirmed their place in the play-off mix.

“It’s a great feeling to win, we knew what we had to do today so to go and win the game in the way we did was great,” he said.

“The lads are buzzing because we had to dig in at times and 1-0 is a dangerous lead because if they nicked one, we had to score.

“I’m delighted to get the win and hopefully we’ll push on in the next game now.”

Beadling was also full of praise for Honeyman and Stinson who both struck superb finishes to edge out the Reds at the Academy of Light.

And the defender, who returned from a move to Australia to join up with the academy at the age of 13, says his focus is now on the play-off match next weekend.

“They were both great finishes and they come at good times as well; it really relieved the pressure,” Beadling explained.

“It’s the play-offs and anything can happen really.”

Beadling featured for Kevin Ball’s development squad in last week’s 2-2 draw with Fulham; a performance Ball described as ‘composed and assured’.

And Beadling says the experience of playing at Craven Cottage, at a higher level, was a great feeling.

“It was a great experience, I was absolutely buzzing,” he said.

“It was good to come back today [to the under-18’s] and get the win we’re all delighted – it was just reward for our hard work.”
