U18 coach reviews eight-goal thriller as youngsters go top.

Sunderland’s U18 coach Craig Liddle was delighted with his team’s performance as the young Black Cats defeated Wolves 5-3 at the Academy of Light on Saturday.

Liddle was most pleased with how his side applied themselves to a different style of play against the Wanderers.

He said: “I was really pleased because it was a different kind of game than what we are used to.

“Wolves were very direct and we got to grips with them quite well, so I was delighted.”

James Stinson scored a hat-trick for the under-18’s, who move top of the Barclays U18 Premier League Group One, and the first-year scholar impressed Liddle with his all-round performance.

“He had a really good game and, again, I’m delighted for him," he explained.

“He works really hard – I was particularly pleased with his second goal, which was a typical striker’s goal in that he followed up the first shot to slot it home.”

George Honeyman impressed from the bench, creating the fourth and scoring the fifth for Liddle’s side, who are unbeaten in three home league games.

“George has been with the reserves so we know he’s very capable.” Liddle added.

“We have had to protect George a bit as he has had a little niggle but it was good he came on and made a difference.”
