Development squad win in Holland.

Sunderland’s development squad finished off their trip to Holland and Germany with a fine 4-2 victory over Dutch third tier side RSKV Leonidas.

Coach Kevin Ball watched on as goals from George Honeyman, Liam Agnew, Billy Knott and Adam Mitchell wrapped up the win on the final day of the tour.

The hosts have garnered a reputation locally for their intense play and the Black Cats were up to the task, and more, when it came to dealing with what the hosts had to offer.

Sunderland were ahead on six minutes as good play from Liam Marrs and Carl Lawson opened up space for the oncoming Honeyman who slotted home.

After an excellent 25 minutes the Black Cats were punished for losing possession in midfield as Leonidas levelled up.

And the hosts were ahead just before half-time as Sunderland conceded a free-kick just outside the box and the Leonidas midfielder dispatched it into the top corner.

Ball urged his players to go out and win the second half after the good early work had been undone by the hosts’ quick-fire double.

The youngsters duly delivered and were level soon after the restart as Agnew followed up Honeyman’s saved free-kick and slid the rebound home.

Sunderland began to find their rhythm after the goal and continued to be largely dominant, though they lacked the clinical finish until Knott popped up in the 75th minute with a fine strike after good play from Mitchell in the wide area.

The Black Cats made it 4-2 shortly after as more good play between Knott, Honeyman and Mitchell produced an opening for the latter to wrap up the win.
