Sunderland suffered defeat at the hands of Manchester United, going down 2-0 at Carrington.

The Wearsiders gave away possession too easily during the first half, with the home side on top.

Sunderland fell behind after 20 minutes when a defensive header back to keeper Joel Dixon fell short and was intercepted and turned over the line.

Sunderland replied with Ross Holland just unable to reach a cross which was cleared away with the goal gaping.

The second period opened with the young Black Cats showing much-improved form.

Mikael Mandron forced a good save and Callum Hope was through with a one-on-one but saw the ball just flash over the top.

It was all Sunderland in the final period but they were caught on the break for a killer second goal two minutes from time.

Coach Craig Liddle said afterwards: “We didn't get started for an hour, but for the last 30 minutes we piled on the pressure.

“It was so disappointing to be caught on the break a couple of minutes from time. We just gave them too much respect for the first 60 minutes of the game.”

Sunderland: Dixon (Maddison, 80), Reece Noble, Lane, Cartwright, Gibbons, Burn, Holland (Lawson, 55), Martin, Mandron, Hope, Honeyman (Gooch, 70).
