Excitement building ahead of Tyneside trip.

John Egan is hoping to get more derby experience under his belt when Sunderland and Newcastle meet tonight.

The two clubs’ respective development squads go head-to-head on Tyneside this evening (KO 7pm) in the new Barclays U21 Premier League.

Egan played in Sunderland’s 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light last season but missed the return game – which ended 3-3 - as he was out on loan.

“It’s never going to be your typical game. We will prepare professionally and playing in these games will be great experience for us

The Irish defender is in contention to face the Magpies tonight and says excitement is building ahead of the short trip to the Sports Direct Arena.

“We’re really looking forward to it, and you can tell when you walk around the Academy,” he told safc.com.

“The derby games are brilliant. I was away on loan for the game up there last season but I played in the home game, which we won.

“There was some fantastic support for both teams and to get the win was great. It gave our season a big boost and we went on a good run after that.

“It’s never going to be your typical game. We will prepare professionally and playing in these games will be great experience for us.

“We’ve had two tough away games so far but this one will be different with it being a local derby.”

Sunderland have played only two league games so far, losing narrowly at Southampton before claiming a deserved point at Spurs.

“I thought we played very well in the first game and produced better football than we did at Spurs,” Egan said. “We just gave away sloppy goals.

“The draw at Spurs was a great result. We had to soak up the pressure but hit them on the counter well and kept the ball ourselves at times.

“We thoroughly deserved a draw and on another day we could have nicked a win.

“We’ve really been working hard defensively. After watching the DVD of the Southampton game I don’t know how we didn’t get anything."
